Please post a reply to the following questions on this blog and within your post, please number your responses so it is clear which response goes with which prompt. Also, please include your name in your post as well. You can respond by writing a comment on this post or you may create a new blog post that contains your responses (there is a "New Post" option at the top right of the page).
1. Read the "Quote of the Day" on the Week Three Power Point by Lucy Calkins and then consider your own philosophy about writing and writing instruction. Borrowing from this quote, any of the readings for this week and/or your own ideas about writing, complete the prompt: "For me, it is essential..." and describe your philosophy about writing and writing instruction in elementary classrooms.
2. Describe and analyze the writing instruction you have seen (and/or done) so far in your classroom. What opportunities for writing are there for your students? Think about both quantity and quality - are students engaging deeply with writing or is there a more surface level interaction? Are there multiple opportunities for writing throughout the day and across subjects? (Please refer to the readings as you respond)
3. Now consider one particular focus student (please use initials or a pseudonym) - any student you wish. How is that student interacting with the writing instruction? Is the student struggling? Thriving? What do you believe is causing the student to struggle or thrive? What particular strategies might you use next to teach this student? (Please refer to the readings as you respond).
